Halifax is Getting a New Sports Team and a Veteran Goalkeeper
If the Mooseheads aren’t enough to entirely fulfill your sports cravings, have no fear because Halifax is getting a new professional soccer team this spring.
The Halifax Tides will be playing in Canada’s new Northern Super League when it debuts in April 2025.
The Northern Super League (NSL) is Canada’s first-ever professional women’s soccer league, co-founded by former national team player, Diana Matheson.
The NSL will consist of the following six teams: Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses FC, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, and Vancouver Rise FC.
Veteran goalkeeper Erin McLeod announced she will be joining the Tides despite her previous retirement plans. McLeod has represented Canada at two Olympics and four FIFA Women’s World Cups.
“Similar to when I used to play for the national team, the idea of playing at home in front of Canadian fans, my family, people that I love. It’s just always been, like, where my heart’s been,” McLeod told CBC Sports.
Although McLeod is originally from Calgary, she is closely tied to the Halifax area through her older sister, who lives here with her family. McLeod was previously named the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility consultant for the Halifax City Soccer Club in 2023.
