What if the media could help you live better — connect you with the people, the places, the local resources and initiatives that might make a difference in your daily life? meet east kind: a new digital platform for the next generation, based out of kjipuktuk/Halifax.

OUR AIM is to be your guide to the local scene — a gateway to what’s happening so you have the knowledge you need to live well in the Kjipuktuk/Halifax corner of the world.

WE DO SO through our arts + culture, food + beverage, and upcoming events coverage — because we believe that coming together, gathering with family, friends and even strangers, eating well, and exploring the world through art and cultural forms is the key to building community and accessing the good life.

WE DO SO by putting together brief primers on important local issues, highlighting community initiatives and resources, and providing you with the facts you need to make informed decisions.

WE DO SO by shining a spotlight on the people making Kjipuktuk/Halifax a vibrant and exciting place to live — amplifying their voices through interviews and profiles that foreground their aims and accomplishments.

EAST KIND was founded in the summer of 2024. We are just getting started — and we hope you come along for the ride.

who we are

editor’s note: why I started east kind

EAST KIND is an independent media outlet in every sense of the word. It’s free from outside control, it doesn’t depend on an external authority (read: corporation), and it originated out of a simple question: what is media — and even knowledge — for, if not to help us live better?

I’ve done a fair bit of arts + culture writing in the past and in the academic world I research social issues like addiction. I also worked for over a decade in hospitality — primarily as a bartender in Toronto — to support myself as an undergraduate and then graduate student. Arts + culture, food + beverage, the critical issues affecting local communities — these are the things I care about.

When I looked around Kjipuktuk/Halifax, however, I didn’t find many outlets covering the kind of content I was interested in reading. And so, I decided to start this project to give myself the opportunity to write and to give you the opportunity to access the coverage that might make a difference in all of our day-to-day lives.

This is a barebones operations. Although my goal is to grow a team of writers, photographers, graphic designers, and social media managers to build East Kind into the platform I believe it can be, this takes time — and money. As we get it off the ground, it’s primarily me writing, sourcing images, running social accounts, and managing the website.

Hard work, being scrappy, staying resilient in the face of obstacles, finding a way — this is what projects look like as they’re getting off the ground. It’s not always romantic or easy, but I believe in the vision I have for East Kind and the power of independent journalism.
