Where to Take Classes as an Adult in Halifax: A Brief Primer

Sure, you can learn a lot from Google and YouTube, but it might be more fun to learn new skills when you’re in the same boat as other beginners.

Arts + crafts, dance, painting, gardening, boxing — you name it, they just might have it around town.

Here’s where to take a variety of adult classes in Halifax:

HALIFAX REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY RECREATION CENTERS

The HRM has recreation centers scattered all over, and many of them have a variety of registered programs for pretty affordable prices.

What’s offered depends on the rec center, but you can find classes in the following areas:

  • Drama

  • Sketch + draw

  • Arts + crafts

  • Explore your trails

  • Yoga

  • Pottery

  • Vocal

  • Photography

  • Quilting

  • Sewing

  • Darts

Khara Woods

NSCAD UNIVERSITY EXTENDED STUDIES

NSCAD is a university that specializes in art and design, but they also offer a variety of extended studies classes for anyone wanting to bring out their creative side.

Classes are available in-person and online in a variety of subjects including:

  • Abstract painting

  • Ceramics

  • Art composition

  • Photography

  • Watercolour painting

NSCAD’s Art Factory Program also provides art education to at-risk, marginalized, and under-represented populations.

DALHOUSIE’S FACULTY OF OPEN LEARNING & CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Through the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development, Dal provides close to 200 courses that can be taken individually or as part of a certificate.

There are a wide range of offerings in-person and online available that are aimed at helping people take the next step in their career or learning journey.

Halifax Dance is a registered charity that educates dancers of all ages and abilities.

For adults, they offer a variety of classes that can be accessed via drop-in or term-length enrollment.

An Afro-Latin dance studio and social dance lounge, Haliente offers a variety of classes including:

They also host social dances and events alongside venue rentals.

QUEENSBURY RULES BOXING

Know how to box? Us neither, and that’s where Queensbury Rules Boxing comes into play.

This studio hosts a number of boxing classes for all levels. They also offer:

  • A 50+ boxing program

  • A women’s boxing program

  • Babybox, a program geared towards new parents that allows you to bring the little one with you

  • A defense workshop series

  • A learn to box program

RINSE HOT YOGA AND PILATES

For better or for worse, a list of adult classes wouldn’t be complete without at least one yoga studio on it.

Part of the R Studios collective, with four locations in and around Halifax, RINSE has an impressive 4.9 Google Maps rating and offers hot yoga, hot pilates, and power flow classes.

They also offer what they call a “Rest” class that gives access to the communal infrared sauna and cold plunge for an hour, which has a definite appeal.

Do spin classes scare us? Yes, but that doesn’t mean they’re not an amazing workout that countless people swear by.

SPINCO again has an impressive 4.9 Google Maps rating and, although they’re temporarily closed for renovations, usually offer a number of spin classes, including outdoor rides.

Their Bedford location is still open so you can always check them out there if you’re raring to go.
