What’s On: Seven Things To Do in and Around Halifax This Week [Nov 18-24 Edition]

As we inch closer to December, the holiday festivities are gearing up in and around Halifax.

This week you can enjoy a Victorian Christmas, a winter market perfect for getting on that holiday shopping, and even the official lighting of the Halifax Christmas tree.

If you’re still pushing back against the holiday season (cc: us), there’s plenty of other events to keep you busy including a still life art exhibit, an author talk, a comedy show, and live concert from an award-winning Canadian musician.

the art of everyday — a still life collection

The Art of Everyday – A Still Life Collection, is a new exhibition featuring the work of six contemporary Nova Scotia artists who bring their vision to the classic genre of still life.

The Art of Everyday runs until Sun. November 24 at The Prow Gallery on Lower Water Street.

at a loss for words

Award-winning author and broadcast journalist Carol Off digs deep into six words whose meanings have been distorted and weaponized in recent years—including democracy, freedom and truth—and asks whether we can reclaim their value.

At a Loss for Words is happening Thurs. November 21 at 7 pm in the University of King’s College Alumni Hall. Tickets can be reserved online through Afterwords but are free.

old man luedecke

The Juno award-winning and Polaris music prize-nominated Old Man Luedecke is back in Halifax performing tracks from his latest album, She Told Me Where to Go —- produced by Afie Jurvanen of Bahamas fame.

Old Man Luedecke is performing Thurs. November 21 at 8 pm at the Light House Arts Centre. Tickets are available from $49.92.

abbas wahab comedy show

Canadian comedian and actor Abbas Wahab is at The Carleton for two back-to-back shows.

Wahab has been featured on Just for Laughs and the Edinburgh Fringe festivals, and is best known for his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. He is also known for his viral parody videos on Instagram and Tiktok.

Check out Wahab on Fri. November 22 at 7 and 9:30 pm. Tickets are $25.

halifax crafters society winter Market

Come out to the 20th anniversary of the Halifax Crafters Society Winter Market.

You’ll find local vendors creating crafts in the realm of 2D and 3D fine art, bath + beauty, textile art, ceramics, jewelry, wood, papercraft, glass + metalsmithing, and more.

The Winter Market is running Fri. November 22 to Sun. November 24 at the Light House Arts Centre. Admission is free.

VICTORIAN cHRISTMAS AT THE CITADEL

Bring the family and head out to the Citadel to celebrate the traditions of Christmas as they were enjoyed by Queen Victoria’s soldiers and their families.

You’ll find parades with Father Christmas, games, campfires, guest performers including choirs, musicians, and dancers, and hot apple cider being served up at the Coffee Bar.

Victorian Christmas at the Citadel is taking place Sat. November 23 from 12 - 4 pm. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item or cash donation.

halifax Christmas Tree Lighting

If you want to keep the holiday spirit going into the night on Saturday, head over to the Grand Parade next to Halifax’s City Hall for the Christmas Tree Lighting.

Along with the lighting of the HRM Christmas Tree you’ll find a visit from Santa Claus, fireworks, live music from Julia Tynes, and more.

The Halifax Christmas Tree Lighting is happening Sat. November 23 at 6 pm.
